Tattoo Healing Mistakes That Cause Faded Ink
Tattoo healing isn't complicated, but small mistakes compound. The difference between a perfectly healed tattoo and a faded blur often comes down to a handful of common errors.
This article focuses on what NOT to do during tattoo healing. For the positive routine to follow, see our Complete Guide to Tattoo Aftercare.
Mistake 1: Over-moisturising
More balm doesn't mean faster healing. Thick layers suffocate the wound, trap bacteria and slow oxygen flow to skin cells. Apply a thin layer of Tiger Spit Tattoo Balm 3-4 times daily — the goal is dewy, not greasy.
Mistake 2: Picking scabs or peeling skin
By week 2, your tattoo will scab and flake. Picking pulls out ink particles that haven't yet settled in the dermis, creating patchy, faded spots. Let everything fall off on its own. If it itches badly, slap (don't scratch) lightly with a clean hand.
Mistake 3: Using the wrong soap
Antibacterial soaps strip the skin barrier. Scented soaps cause irritation. Use only a fragrance-free, non-antibacterial soap or our Tiger Spit Foam Wash designed for fresh tattoos.
Mistake 4: Petroleum-based products (Vaseline, Aquaphor)
Petroleum creates an occlusive seal that traps bacteria and ink particles trying to settle. It also pulls ink out of the dermis during the first days. Switch to a natural, vegan balm like Tiger Spit instead.
Mistake 5: Sun exposure during healing
UV light during the healing phase is catastrophic. New tattoos can fade dramatically — or worse, blister — from just an hour at the beach. Keep tattoos covered with clothing for the first month. SPF only AFTER full healing.
Mistake 6: Tight clothing rubbing
Friction lifts ink. Tight jeans on a thigh tattoo, bra straps on a back piece, sleeves on an arm — they all pull ink during the first 2 weeks. Wear loose clothing over fresh tattoos.
Mistake 7: Swimming and soaking
Pools, hot tubs, ocean, bathtubs — all problematic for at least 2-3 weeks. Quick showers only. Prolonged water exposure softens scabs and lifts ink.
The recovery
If you've made some of these mistakes already, don't panic. Most damage is recoverable with a clean reset: gentle wash, thin Tiger Spit Tattoo Balm, no friction, no sun. The body is forgiving.
