Complete Guide to Tattoo Aftercare with Tiger Spit
A tattoo is an open wound during its first weeks. How you care for it determines healing speed, infection risk, and how vibrant your ink looks for the next decade.
This is the complete Tiger Spit aftercare guide — covering every phase from the moment you leave the studio chair to long-term ink preservation. For specialised guides on specific situations (first 24 hours, sensitive skin, large pieces), see the linked sections below.
Phase 1: Right after the session (Hours 0-4)
Your artist will cover the fresh tattoo with cling film, a sterile bandage, or a second-skin medical film like Saniderm or Dermalize. Leave it on for the time your artist specified — typically 2-4 hours for standard wraps, 24-72 hours for second-skin films. The dressing protects against airborne bacteria during the most vulnerable phase. For a detailed hour-by-hour breakdown of the first day, read our First 24 Hours After Your Session guide.
Phase 2: First wash and aftercare (Day 1-2)
Once you remove the initial dressing, wash your hands thoroughly. Gently rinse the tattoo with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free, non-antibacterial soap. Use your clean fingertips — never a cloth or sponge. Pat dry with a clean paper towel.
Apply a thin layer of Tiger Spit Tattoo Balm. The keyword is thin — too much suffocates the wound; just enough lets the skin breathe while preventing dryness. Reapply 3-4 times daily.
Phase 3: Active healing (Day 3-14)
This is when the tattoo will start to scab and peel. The skin tightens, itches, and looks dull. All normal. Stay consistent:
- Wash twice daily with fragrance-free soap, or use our Tiger Spit Foam Wash
- Apply Tiger Spit Tattoo Balm 3-4 times daily in thin layers
- Do not pick scabs, do not scratch — slap lightly if itchy
- Wear loose clothing over the tattoo
- No swimming, baths, hot tubs, or saunas
- No direct sun exposure
Phase 4: Surface healing complete (Week 3-4)
By week 3, surface healing is mostly complete. Scabs have fallen off naturally, redness has faded. The tattoo may still look slightly dull — this is normal. Continue moisturising with Tiger Spit Tattoo Balm daily. Light exercise is fine. Avoid prolonged sun exposure until full healing.
Phase 5: Deep healing and long-term care (Month 1-6+)
Deep skin healing continues for up to 6 months. The tattoo will look its final brightness around week 6-8. From now on, focus on preservation:
- Daily SPF 50 on exposed tattooed skin — UV is the #1 cause of fading
- Moisturise 2-3 times a week to keep skin barrier healthy
- Monthly treatment with Tiger Spit Ink Reviver for tattoos older than 6 months
For long-term vibrancy strategies, see our Long-Lasting Vibrant Ink guide.
Common mistakes to avoid
The biggest aftercare mistakes that fade ink: over-moisturising, using petroleum products (Vaseline, Aquaphor), picking scabs, sun exposure during healing, tight clothing friction, antibacterial soaps. For the full list, see Tattoo Healing Mistakes That Cause Faded Ink.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a tattoo take to heal?
Surface healing: 2-3 weeks. Full skin layer healing: 2-6 months depending on size and skin type. See our Complete Healing Timeline for details.
Can I exercise during tattoo healing?
Light walking and gentle activity are fine after day 3. Avoid heavy sweating, gym friction, swimming, and contact sports for 2-3 weeks.
When can I shower normally?
Quick showers are fine from day 1 (avoid direct water jets on the tattoo). Long soaks, baths, and hot showers should wait 2-3 weeks.
My tattoo is peeling — is that normal?
Yes. Peeling and flaking starts around day 5-7 and continues for about a week. Do not pick — let it fall off naturally.
What if my tattoo gets infected?
Signs of infection: spreading redness beyond the tattoo, pus (not normal seepage), fever, red streaks. Contact your artist or a doctor immediately.
