Tattoo Aftercare for Sensitive and Reactive Skin

If your skin reacts to perfumes, gets red from new soaps, or breaks out from random ingredients, healing a tattoo requires extra care.

This guide covers tattoo aftercare for sensitive skin types. For the general healing routine, see our Complete Guide to Tattoo Aftercare.

What "sensitive skin" actually means

Sensitive skin reacts visibly (redness, itching, burning) to ingredients most skin tolerates. Causes range from genetic skin barrier deficiencies (atopic dermatitis, eczema) to acquired reactivity from chronic irritation. The healing tattoo wound amplifies everything — including reactions.

Ingredients to avoid during healing

  • Fragrance (parfum, "natural" essential oils): the #1 cause of aftercare reactions
  • Lanolin: derived from sheep wool, common allergen
  • Petroleum: in Aquaphor, Vaseline — clogs pores, traps irritants
  • Parabens: common preservatives, frequent sensitiser
  • Alcohol denat: dries skin and disrupts barrier

Why Tiger Spit works for sensitive skin

Tiger Spit Tattoo Balm was formulated specifically without the common irritants. It's fragrance-free, petroleum-free, paraben-free, and 100% vegan, with no synthetic colours. The base ingredients — shea butter, vitamin E, aloe vera, calendula extract and gentle plant oils — are tolerated by the vast majority of sensitive skin types.

Patch test before applying to a fresh tattoo

Even with a gentle balm, patch test if you have known reactivity. Apply a small amount to your inner forearm 48 hours before your session. No redness or itching means you're cleared.

If you have eczema or atopic dermatitis

People with eczema can get tattooed safely, but require extra care:

  • Get tattooed during a non-flare period
  • Avoid placement directly over chronically affected areas
  • Discuss your condition with your artist beforehand
  • Use Tiger Spit Tattoo Balm — formulated to be eczema-compatible
  • Have a dermatologist on call if symptoms appear

Signs of a reaction vs normal healing

Normal: mild redness around the tattoo, light swelling, warmth, slight itching during peeling.

Reaction: redness extending beyond the tattoo, hives, severe itching, burning, blistering. Stop applying the product immediately. Wash with cool water. If symptoms persist, see a dermatologist.

The minimal sensitive-skin routine

  1. Wash with lukewarm water only (or our fragrance-free Foam Wash)
  2. Pat dry with a clean paper towel
  3. Apply a tiny amount of Tiger Spit Tattoo Balm
  4. Repeat 3 times daily
  5. If anything reacts, stop immediately and consult a dermatologist

Sensitive skin doesn't have to mean no tattoos. With the right routine and the right products, healing can be just as smooth as anyone else's.
