Tattoo Aftercare: The First 24 Hours After Your Session

The first 24 hours after getting a tattoo set the foundation for how your ink heals — and how it looks for the next decade.

This guide walks you through the first day hour by hour, from the moment you leave the studio chair to the morning after. For the complete healing process from day 2 onward, read our Complete Guide to Tattoo Aftercare with Tiger Spit.

Hour 0-2: Straight after the session

Your artist will cover the fresh tattoo with cling film, a sterile bandage, or second-skin medical film (Saniderm or similar). Do not remove it before the time your artist specified — typically 2-4 hours for basic wraps, 24-72 hours for second-skin films.

Hour 2-6: First removal and wash

Wash your hands. Gently rinse the tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap, using your clean fingertips — no cloths or sponges. Pat dry with a clean paper towel (cotton fibres can stick to open skin).

Hour 6-24: First aftercare application

Once clean and dry, apply a thin layer of Tiger Spit Tattoo Balm. The keyword is thin — too much suffocates the wound, just enough lets the skin breathe. Reapply 2-3 times during the first day.

What to avoid in the first 24 hours

  • No swimming, baths, hot tubs, or saunas
  • No tight clothing rubbing against the tattoo
  • No direct sun exposure
  • No alcohol or excessive sweating
  • No touching with unwashed hands

Normal vs concerning signs

Mild redness, swelling and warmth are normal. Concerning signs: spreading redness, pus (not normal seepage), fever, or red streaks moving away from the tattoo — contact your artist or a doctor.

What comes next

After the first 24 hours, you transition into the multi-day healing routine. The first day is the hardest part — once you get through it correctly, the rest is consistency. Continue with our full aftercare guide for days 2-30.
