Tattoo Aftercare by Tattoo Size: Small Pieces vs Large Tattoos
A 3cm finger tattoo and a full back piece are both healing wounds — but the aftercare strategy isn't the same.
This guide breaks down aftercare based on tattoo size. For the general healing process, see our Complete Guide to Tattoo Aftercare.
Small tattoos (under 10cm)
Small pieces — fingers, behind the ear, ankle, inner forearm — heal in about 7-10 days for surface healing. The challenges are different: skin areas with constant movement (fingers, hands), high friction (wrists, ankles), or thin skin (eyelid, lip).
- Use Tiger Spit Tattoo Balm 30ml — a small jar lasts the whole healing
- Apply 3-4 times daily
- Cover with clothing when sweating or doing physical activity
- Hand and finger tattoos: avoid frequent handwashing during day 1-3
Medium tattoos (10-30cm)
Forearms, calves, chest panels, single shoulder pieces. Standard healing window: 2-3 weeks.
- Tattoo Balm 30ml is usually enough, or upgrade to 150ml for value
- Apply 3-4 times daily with thin layers
- Avoid tight clothing rubbing over the area
- Watch for uneven healing — apply slightly more in areas that look drier
Large tattoos (30-60cm)
Half sleeves, thigh pieces, partial back. These require larger product volumes and more attention to uneven healing.
- Use the 150ml Tattoo Balm — 30ml jar runs out quickly
- Apply 4-5 times daily for the first week
- Different areas of the same large tattoo heal at different rates — pay attention
- Consider our Foam Wash for easier cleaning of large areas
Full sleeves and back pieces (over 60cm)
The biggest aftercare challenge. These tattoos are usually done in multiple sessions, meaning you're managing fresh and healing skin simultaneously.
- Use the 150ml Tattoo Balm or the Complete Kit bundle
- Apply 4-5 times daily for first 2 weeks, then 2-3 times daily until healed
- Foam Wash is essential for keeping large areas clean
- Sleep on the side opposite the tattoo for the first week
- Healing timeline extends to 4-6 weeks for surface, longer for deep healing
Special placements regardless of size
Some placements have unique considerations: joints (knees, elbows) heal slower due to constant flexing; ribs are notoriously painful and slow to heal; feet are high-friction zones; necks and faces are visible during healing. Adjust your routine — apply more frequently in difficult areas.
One product, multiple sizes
The good news: Tiger Spit Tattoo Balm works the same regardless of tattoo size. The only thing that changes is how much you use and how often. Match the jar size to your tattoo and you're set.
