Tattoo Aftercare Tips
After getting a tattoo, you should avoid:
- Touching it with unclean hands.
- Exposing it to direct sunlight or UV rays.
- Soaking it in water for extended periods.
- Picking or scratching at scabs.
- Applying alcohol or petroleum products to the tattoo.
- Wearing tight clothing that rubs against the tattoo.
- Engaging in activities that increase perspiration on the tattoo.
- Always follow your tattoo artist's aftercare instructions for optimal healing and to preserve the appearance of your tattoo.
Tips to shorten tattoo healing time:
- Cover the tattoo with clothing to protect it from sunlight
- Don't re-bandage the tattoo after removing the initial dressing, let it breathe
- Clean the tattoo daily with lukewarm and sterile water, using fragrance-free soap
- Apply aftercare ointment or moisturizer as recommended by the artist
- Don't scratch or pick at the scab
- Avoid using scented products near the tattoo
- Don't soak or submerge the tattoo in water for 2 weeks
- Watch for signs of improper healing such as fever, prolonged redness, oozing fluid, swelling, itching, hives, or scarring
The healing process can take 2 to 3 weeks for the outer layer of skin to appear healed and up to 6 months for complete healing. Proper aftercare is crucial to reduce the risk of infection or other complications.
